Back pain: A slipped disc can affect the sciatic nerve
Pain in the lower back – also known as lumbago – is particularly common, although it can be felt anywhere along the spine – from the neck down to the hips.
In most cases the pain isn’t caused by anything serious and will usually get better over time – it could be caused by a pulled muscle or as a result of having slept in a more unusual position.
Most back pain does not have an obvious causes or originate from joints, bones or soft tissue around the spine.
This tends to get better or worse depending on position – can develop suddenly or gradually and can be as a result of poor posture or lifting something awkwardly.
However it may be due to a minor injury such as sprain caused by a strained ligament or strain, pulled muscle.
Back pain: Breast, neck and muscle problems are very common
There are five key medical conditions which can cause back pain.
A slipped disc
A slipped disc of cartilage in the spine pressing on a nerve can cause back pain and numbness, tingling and weakness in other parts of the body.
The sciatic nerve is often affected in cases of slipped disc.
Sciatica is caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve – the longest nerve in the body which runs from the back of the pelvis through the buttocks and down each leg to the feet.(
This can cause pain, numbness, tingling and weakness in the lower back, buttocks, legs and feet.
It usually happens when one of the shock-absorbing discs that sits between the bones of the spine bulges – or ‘slips’ – and then presses on the nerve.
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic condition in which the spine and other areas of the body become inflamed – or swollen.
The condition causes pain and stiffness that’s usually worse in the morning and improves with movement,
Spondylolisthesis is where a bone in the spine (vertebra) slips out of position, either forwards or backwards.
It’s most common in the lower back (lumbar spine), but it can also occur in the mid to upper back (thoracic spine) or the neck (cervical spine).
Back pain: Sciatica is caused by an irritation of the sciatic nerve
The condition can cause lower back pain and stiffness, as well as numbness and tingling.
Very rarely, back pain can be a sign of a serious problem such as a broken bone in the spine, an infection, cauda equina syndrome (where the nerves in the lower back become severely compressed) or cancer.
Back, neck and muscle problems led to a staggering 31 million days of work being lost last year, according to one study.
The condition is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide and is commonly managed temporarily by prescribing medicines such as anti-inflammatories.
