What Causes Vitiligo To Spread?

Vitiligo is caused by the lack of a pigment called melanin in the skin. Melanin is produced by skin cells called melanocytes, and it gives your skin its colour. In vitiligo, there are not enough working melanocytes to produce enough melanin in your skin. This causes white patches to develop on your skin or hair.

It depends on the form of vitiligo. So-called “focal” vitiligo (patches on one or a few areas) and “segmented” vitiligo (patches on one side of the body) generally don’t spread. But “generalized” vitiligo – often does spread. Sometimes the patches spread slowly, sometimes fast. There’s some evidence that physical and emotional stress can contribute to the spread.

Diet for vitiligo prevention

While there’s no officially prescribed “vitiligo diet,” the best nutritional steps that you can take include eating a healthy diet full of good nutrients and drinking lots of water. And, as with any autoimmune disorder, you may benefit from immune system-boosting foods that contain phytochemicals, beta-carotene, and antioxidants.

Here are some foods that people with vitiligo have cited as helpful for their condition:

  • bananas
  • apples
  • leafy greens, such as kale or romaine lettuce
