At Welling Homeopathy Clinics, we have developed our in-house speciality treatment for diabetes and diabetes complications. We regularly consult for men with diabetes and help in halting or reversing if possible the complications of diabetes.

Diabetes in Men

Type 2 diabetes usually appears in people over the age of 40, though in Indians, who are at greater risk, it often appears from the age of 25. It is also increasingly becoming more common in children, adolescents and young people of all ethnicities. Type 2 diabetes accounts for between 85 and 95 per cent of all people with diabetes and is treated with a healthy diet and increased physical activity.

The symptoms of diabetes in men and women are generally similar but there are certain symptoms which are either unique to males or may be more noticeable in men.

The common symptoms of diabetes

  • Going to the toilet a lot, especially at night.
  • Being really thirsty.
  • Feeling more tired than usual.
  • Losing weight without trying to.
  • Genital itching or thrush.
  • Cuts and wounds take longer to heal.
  • Blurred vision.

Reduced strength and loss of muscle mass

Unexplained loss of muscle mass may be a sign of high sugar levels and diabetes. If blood sugar levels remain at high levels for relatively long periods during the day, the body will start to break down fat and muscle for energy.

The resulting weight loss is usually most noticeable in people with type 1 diabetes.

However, it can also affect people with type 2 diabetes that has gone undiagnosed for a long period of time.

Diabetes and male sex problems

Both men and women can have problems with sex resulting from long-term high blood sugar levels. Women can experience less lubrication and desire for sex.

Men can develop the problem of erectile dysfunction. This means they can be unable to have sex at all because of effects that prevent an erection of the penis, or cause the erection not to last long enough.

Erections rely on blood flow to the penis and a good nerve supply to make them happen.

Diabetes can affect the blood vessels and nerves of the body if blood sugar levels are not well controlled.

These complications progress in the same way as those that can lead, for example, to a loss of feeling in the feet. These are caused by nerve damage known as neuropathy.

The damaged blood supply affects:

  • The stimulation and response of the nerves that trigger and maintain an erection
  • The flow of blood into the penis

Recurrent genital thrush

Genital thrush is a yeast infection that can occur if blood sugar levels are high, causing sugar to be passed out via the urine.

Symptoms of genital thrush include:

  • Redness on or around the head of the penis
  • Swelling on or around the head of the penis
  • Itching on or around the head of the penis
  • Unpleasant odour
  • A white curd-like appearance on the skin
  • Soreness during sex
